Abstract

This exploratory study investigates to what extent early trilinguals produce native-like speech in their three languages.

Our participants speak Spanish at home, are schooled mainly in English, and attend French immersion in Canada. They were recorded reading words starting with a stop (/p/, /t/, /k/). Although they seem to produce monolingual-like stops in English and Spanish, a fine-grained comparison to a monolingual control group uncovered deviations from the Spanish norm, thus revealing traces of a "heritage accent".
