Donna Kozak

Donna Kozak has been a teacher for 33 years beginning her career in the primary grades, then teaching middle school students in a literacy intervention program. Donna has spent the last few years as a school district coordinator in early learning and literacy supporting early childhood educators with increasing their knowledge in early language and literacy development.

Donna is currently a PhD candidate and an adjunct professor teaching sessional and post-baccalaureate courses at the University of British Columbia - Okanagan, in the area of language and literacy development, teaching literacy to students with diverse needs, as well as supervising teacher candidates in their practicum. Her research interests include multi-literacies, diversity and culturally responsive curriculum, home-school connection, teacher preparation in literacy and literacy pedagogy in the early years.

How we approach diversity and inclusion in Canadian classrooms

The seminar will cover three interrelated items:

  • The first item is an overview of British Columbia's redesigned curriculum 2016 for Kindergarden - grade 9 and its influence on the teacher preparation program.
  • The second item is how teacher candidates in their literacy courses learn to approach inclusion and diversity in the classrooms.
  • As a third item, Donna Kozak will talk about her own PhD research, that is exploring home-school connections and its implications for teacher preparation in literacy and diversity.
