Most of the older Sami did not have the opportunity to learn how to read and write in Sami languages, but rather in the majority languages Norwegian, Finnish or Swedish. This contributed to the fact that many chose to not speak Sami with their own children, which is a typical start of language weakening processes which tend to end in language death.
2019 is the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages, with the scope of increasing understanding and creating favourable conditions for dissemination of good practices with regards to indigenous languages. So, what is the story of langage use in schools by our local indigenous people, the Sami? Historian Otso Korekangas will guide us through the story with specific research focus on the period 1900-1940.
